A NEW LAND PATTERN FLINTLOCK PISTOL CIRCA 1796 MARKED TO THE WILTSHIRE YEOMANRY CAVALRY

A 16-Bore New Land Pattern Flintlock Pistol, with 9” round barrel stamped with Tower proof and viewing marks, lock stamped with GR beneath a crown and TOWER across the tail, walnut full-stock impressed with inspection marks, plain brass regulation mounts and original captive stirrup ramrod. In well used condition with handling marks to the stock and pitting to barrel and ramrod. Trigger Guard marked “WYC A 78”

The Pistol is marked “WYC A 78” on the trigger guard for the Wilshire Yeomanry Cavalry A (Devizes) Sqn, armoury number 78. The Wiltshire Yeomanry Cavalry were first raised in the Bear Hotel in Devizes in 1794 as 10 troops of Yeomanry Cavalry for Wiltshire. These initial troops were then formed in to the WYC shortly afterwards in 1797. During the early 19th Century, the WYC were called upon to deal with civil disorder in Wiltshire including the mutiny of the Devizes Militia, the swing riots and the machine riots. In recognition of this service the regiment was awarded the title “Royal” by King William IV in 1831 and became the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry.
